The Horus Heresy Weekender 2019

The annual conclave of all things Horus Heresy-related is happening this weekend, and the official program has just been announced - so I can now confirm I'll be along talking about The Buried Dagger, my next novel in the series...and the last before the Siege of Terra!

The official blurb sez: For fans of the Horus Heresy and Adeptus Titanicus, the Horus Heresy Weekender is the ultimate event not to be missed. Prepare to immerse yourself fully as you explore every detail of these worlds. Chat with the masterminds who created them, see the latest miniatures, and uncover what the future holds for the hobby you love. If you want a dedicated weekend that leaves no stone unturned, then the Horus Heresy Weekender is for you!

This year the Weekender is taking place at the Radisson Blu Hotel at East Midlands Airport near Derby, and tickets are still available right Here.

I'm appearing on a few panels over the two days:

On Saturday I'll be discussing The Fate of the Death Guard in the Throne Room from 11:45am to 12:45pm, and then in the Remembrancer's Hall from 4:15pm to 5:15pm I'll be discussing the first part of the Scions of the Emperor.

On Sunday, I'm back in the Remembrancer's Hall from 10:30am to 11:30am for the second part of the Scions of the Emperor discussion, followed by a conversation about The Journey of Nathaniel Garro from Midday to 1:00pm.

I'll also be signing books at the Scribe Station on Saturday from 10:30am to 11:30am and again between 5:30pm and 6:30pm; and on the Sunday from 2:30pm to 3:30pm.

New Covers!

Some news dropped at the recent Black Library Weekender event about a few of the Horus Heresy and Warhammer 40,000 projects I have on the horizon; first (or maybe last!) was the official cover reveal for the final Heresy novel, The Buried Dagger...

Black Library also announced that print-on-demand hardbacks of the first four Horus Heresy novels, including The Flight of the Eisenstein by me, will be back in print from November 17th.

On the subject of reprints, new Warhammer 40,000 omnibus editions are on the way, compiling my Blood Angels fiction, and the Dark Angels and Iron Warriors by m'colleagues Gav Thorpe and Graham McNeill...

And not to be forgotten, the Warhammer Legends partwork series will be re-releasing a new hardcover edition of my Horus Heresy novel Fear to Tread this month.

Legendary!

October is a banner month for some neat re-releases from my back-catalog in the grimdark worlds of Warhammer!

Two titles are hitting in short order, one that features a story of the Adepta Sororitas - the zealous Sisters of Battle - and another from the Horus Heresy era, a tale of the traitorous Death Guard.

Back in 2011, I wrote my second Sororitas novel Hammer & Anvil, and now the Warhammer Legends partwork series is releasing it in a spiffy new hardcover edition, on sale in all good bookstores on the 17th of this month.

The Sisters of Battle are the Emperor's most devout worshippers, fierce warriors preaching the purity of the Imperium and scourging their enemies with bolter and flamer.

On a distant world, the Ecclesiarchy outpost of Sanctuary 101, was wiped out by an implacable foe - the fearless, soulless necrons. Now, a mission of the Sisterhood has returned to reconsecrate the site - but the metallic nightmares still lurk in the darkness, guarding a secret that has lain dormant for millennia.
A vicious battle will be fought - one that can only end in the total destruction of the unrelenting xenos, or the annihilation of the proud Sororitas.

To visit the Warhammer Legends site, click Here or go Here to order individual copies of the partwork hardcovers; if digital is more your speed, you can still pick up the eBook edition right Here.

Later this month - the 20th to be exact - you'll be able to pick up a copy of Heralds of the Siege, a new Horus Heresy short fiction collections, featuring content by me, Gav Thorpe, Chris Wraight, John French, Guy Haley, Nick Kyme, Rob Sanders and Anthony Reynolds.

A galaxy burns and brother turns on brother as the conflict brought about by a beloved son’s betrayal reaches its fateful end.
The Warmaster Horus has triumphed. His massive fleet at last nears Terra and the patriarchal Throne of his hated father.
Many have fallen to bring this moment about, their tales are the ashes upon which the Heresy was born and prospered.
Others have played their own small parts, drops in an ocean of war and blood.
None of it matters.
Terra looks to the skies as it raises its defences. Armies muster, heroes raise their swords, citizens cower.
The war is coming. And nothing can stop it.

My contribution to this hefty tome is "Exocytosis", a story featuring the Death Guard and the character of Calas Typhon, which set him up for his appearance in my upcoming Horus Heresy novel The Buried Dagger (due in Spring of 2019). "Exocytosis" originally appeared in the 2016 Black Library Advent Calendar series and this marks its first dead-tree edition.

Click Here for more details on The Horus Heresy: Heralds of the Siege.

And as a bonus cover reveal for this blog, check out this amazing art from Johan Grenier for the new collected edition of all my Warhammer 40,000 Blood Angels stories - The Complete Rafen Omnibus...

This collection features all the stories and novels in and around Rafen's epic narrative - The Fury, Deus Encarmine, Blood Debt, Deus Sanguinius, Redeemed, Red Fury, Black Tide, Bloodline and Reflection in Blood. The book will be available in January 2019, but for more details click Here.

Space Hulk Tactics strikes!

A few months back, I mentioned that I'd been doing some scriptwriting work on a new Warhammer 40,000 videogame - and this week Space Hulk Tactics deep-strikes its way on to Xbox One, Playstation 4 and PC platforms for all players...

Space Hulk Tactics is a turn-based strategy game set in the Warhammer 40,000 universe, pitting squads of Space Marine Terminators against swarms of alien Genestealers aboard a massive amalgamation of abandoned starships - the gargantuan Space Hulk known as The Forsaken Doom...

Based on the classic Games Workshop boardgame, Space Hulk Tactics lets you pick between these two factions in full campaigns, solo vs. AI, or via competitive online play.

The game has two narrative campaigns (scripted by me), one from the point of view of the venerable Blood Angels chapter and one casting players in the role of the rapacious alien Genestealers.

Here's a link to a developer blog I wrote about the storylines.

A "card" system enhances the turn-based strategy gameplay, ensuring no two games are ever the same and giving you many more tactical options on every turn. There's also a versatile map editing tool, so games can create and upload their own scenarios.

Check out the official Space Hulk Tactics website right Here, for more details, along with ordering details. The game is released on 9th October, but pre-orders will get bonus custom content.

Warhammer Fest Europe

It's been a while since my last Games Workshop/Black Library event, so I'm looking forward to appearing at Warhammer Fest Europe 2018 in Düsseldorf this weekend. It'll be great to visit Germany again; last time was to take part in Games Day in Cologne, and the welcome I got from the fans over there was fantastic.

WFE 2018 is taking place on Saturday August 18th and Sunday August 19th at the Maritim Hotel in Düsseldorf, and it's going to be a big one, with a ton of stuff going one for fans of the worlds of Warhammer and the Horus Heresy.

I'm appearing on the Saturday to represent the Black Library - First off, I'll be signing books from Midday to 1:00pm, and then straight after from 1:00pm-2:00pm I'll be talking about my forthcoming Horus Heresy novel The Buried Dagger, the fate of the Knights Errant and the Doom of the Death Guard.

Then from 3:00pm-4:00pm I'll join BL Germany's head of translation Tobias Roesner to talk more about our books, before a final signing session from 4:00pm. The signing will be a short one, as I have to dash off to catch my flight home...

M'colleague David Guymer will be there to fly the flag on the Sunday, so be sure to check out his talks and signings as well.

Along with me and David, there will be folks from the Forge World, Citadel, White Dwarf, Army Painter and ‘Eavy Metal Teams, plus the usual Golden Demon painting competition, displays, workshops, demo games and a whole load of tournaments

Full details of the other seminars taking place can be found Here.

The main event is 10.00am to 6.00pm on Saturday and 10.00am to 4.00pm on Sunday - for more details, tickets and the like, click Here.

And for or those of you who can't make it along, there will be a live blog covering the event at the Warhammer Community site Here.

Bis bald!

Space Hulk Tactics

Having been working on videogame projects since 1999 and written for the grim dark future of Warhammer 40,000 since 2003, it was clearly fated that one day I was going to get to combine the two...

...and so I am pleased to announce that I have teamed up with Cyanide Studios and Focus Interactive, to work with them on the narrative for their forthcoming turn-based tactical game Space Hulk: Tactics!

Bringing a unique twist to the classic gameplay of the cult board game, engage in bloody battles through an immense Space Hulk - a twisted mass of asteroids, wrecked ships and debris – as either a squad of Terminator Space Marines or the deadly alien Genestealers. Which side will you choose?

Battle through two distinct, narrative-driven campaigns, from the points of view of two different factions: one campaign puts you in control of a Blood Angels squad, which you will customise and upgrade as you progress, while the other puts you in control of the Genestealers for the first time in a Space Hulk game!

Test your skills against other players in the expansive online competitive multiplayer, letting you command a swarm of Genestealers or a custom squad of different unit types from one of four Space Marine Chapters – the Blood Angels, the Space Wolves, the Ultramarines, and the Dark Angels. Multiplayer modes and tools offer a rich and deep online experience, and include an intuitive map creation tool, which gives players everything they need to create original maps with custom objective, and share them with other players to play either online or against the AI, all from within the game!

Space Hulk: Tactics will be released later in 2018 on PC, Xbox One and PlayStation 4 platforms, and you can find more details about the game at the official website Here.

Black Library Weekender IV

It's the IVth Black Library Weekender this, uh, weekend, and I'll be along as usual talking about my fiction from the worlds of Warhammer 40,000 and the Horus Heresy, joined by a bunch of my fellow authors and artists...

Saturday:
11.30am - 12.30am: Signing in the Administratum Room.
1.30pm - 2.30pm: I join Gav Thorpe and George Mann in the Strategium Room to talk about Black Library audio dramas.
4.00pm - 5.00pm: I'm in the Briefing Chamber with Gav and John French talking about scriptwriting for audio.
Sunday:

11.15am - 12.15am: I'll be in the Audience Chamber, discussing "The Emperor's Noble Sons" with Chris Wraight, David Annandale and David Guymer.

There's also a metric f'ton of new stuff and early releases hitting at the event - and you can see the full list here - but among them is an all-new Warhammer 40,000 audio drama I've written called Corsair: The Face of the Void.

This is the first in what may be a series of stories following the misadventures of Captain Athene Santiago and the crew of the Rogue Trader starship Corsair.

We've got a great cast of characters and I've had a great time writing this tale - you can find out more about the audio here.

War Stories

New anthologies and reprints are hitting this month from Black Library, from the might clashes of the Horus Heresy and the grim dark future of Warhammer 40,000...and I got stories in both!

Already out now is Crusade + Other Stories, a collection of Warhammer 40,000 fiction that is designed to act as an introductory volume for new readers looking to get their first taste of the 41st millennium (hence the "Start Here" flash on the cover).

From a battle between the valiant Ultramarines and their plague-ridden Death Guard foes, to tales of alien enemies and the Imperium's many brave defenders, this anthology brings together a collection of stories perfect for learning about the various factions of the Warhammer 40,000 universe – it's your ideal first step into the adrenaline-fulled fiction of the 41st Millennium.

My contribution is the prose adaptation of my Sisters of Battle audio story Red & Black, but you'll also find the titular novella by Andy Clark and other fiction from Dan Abnett, David Annandale, Aaron Dembski-Bowden, Peter Fehervari, John French, L J Goulding, Robbie MacNiven, Steve Parker, Josh Reynolds and Gav Thorpe.

Crusade + Other Stories is available Here in paperback, eBook and audiobook editions.

Also out this month is the paperback reprint of the Horus Heresy anthology The Silent War, which features three short stories by me - Ghosts Speak Not, Lost Sons and Patience. The collection also includes stories by C Z Dunn, John French, Nick Kyme, Graham McNeill, Anthony Reynolds, Rob Sanders and Chris Wraight.

The Silent War is available Here in the new paperback edition, along with several others.

CORSAIR: THE FACE OF THE VOID cover reveal

It's been a while since I did some new audio stuff for Black Library, so I'm pleased to announce a forthcoming Warhammer 40,000 project...

This full cast audio drama centers on the crew of the Rogue Trader starship Corsair, a rag-tag, eclectic assemblage commanded by Captain Athene Santiago, who travel the forgotten backwaters of the Imperium taking whatever shady commissions keep their vessel running.

When a bounty mission to capture a pirate vessel turns into a deadly mystery, Santiago discovers something ancient and terrifying that threatens not only her ship but the entire sector...

We've got a great cast assembled, including Beth Chalmers, Barnaby Edwards, Cliff Chapman and more. And I love the cover we've got for this, from the amazing Johan Grenier; check out more of his work at his ArtStation page right Here.

Warhammer 40,000: Corsair - The Face of the Void is out in January 2018 and will be available to pre-order soon from Black Library, so keep an eye on this link.

SISTERS OF BATTLE: THE OMNIBUS is OUT NOW!

One of the most-asked questions I get from fans of Warhammer 40,000 is "When are you going to write more about the Sisters of Battle?" The answer is: "Right now!"

Back in '06 I wrote Black Library's first long-form fiction about one of the most striking factions in the grim dark future of the 41st Millennium, the Adepta Sororitas - otherwise known as the Sisters of Battle. That novel was Faith & Fire, and a few years later I followed it up with an audio drama called Red & Black, and a second novel, Hammer & Anvil. This Battle Sisters have been on the fringes of the worlds of Warhammer for a while, but now they're back in force - and so is a new paperback omnibus collecting all my Sororitas stories in one place...

The Adepta Soroitas, or Sisters of Battle, are the military arm of the Ecclesiarchy, and their remit is to prosecute the enemies of mankind with extreme prejudice. Uniquely among the fighting forces of the Imperium, all the warriors of this organisation are female. Clad in ceramite power armour and armed with and awesome array of wargear, they fight with fanatical fervour for the glory of the Emperor, scourging both xenos and heretic alike with bolter and flamer.

Sisters of Battle: The Omnibus features an introduction by me, a prose adaptation of the prequel audio story Red & Black, the novels Faith & Fire and Hammer & Anvil - and in print for the first time anywhere, the all-new short story Heart & Soul, set after the events of the last book, following Battle Sister Miriya and Sister-Hospitaller Verity in a deadly confrontation with a sinister foe known as the Iconoclast, who seems to know their every move before they make it...

This collected is available in paperback from all good bookstores, or directly from Black Library (where you can also get an eBook version).

And my Adepta Sororitas novel Faith & Fire is also a part of BL's 30 Years of Warhammer 40,000 book bundle, 30 eBooks from the past three decades of Games Workshop's available Here until the end of September.

GARRO: WEAPON OF FATE out now in paperback!

It's hard to believe that it's been ten years since I first took up the pen to write about Nathaniel Garro and his odyssey through the catastrophic events of the Horus Heresy saga. Back when I wrote The Flight of the Eisenstein - which would go on to be one of my most popular books - I had no idea that the noble, "straight-arrow" Garro would become such a fan favorite and an enduring viewpoint character for the Heresy series.

His newest entry in the saga comes in the pages of Weapon of Fate, out now in paperback from all good bookstores. This book is a prose collection featuring adaptations of all the Garro audio dramas to date (Oath of Moment, Legion of One, Shield of Lies, Sword of Truth, Burden of Duty, Ashes of Fealty) and the novella Vow of Faith.

From out of the shadows of the Silent War, a hero emerges. Clad all in grey, an errant warrior of the Legiones Astartes kneels before the Regent of Terra, and accepts a solemn new duty – Battle-Captain Garro, once commander of the Eisenstein, now Agentia Primus of Malcador the Sigillite.

From the desolation of Isstvan to the halls of the Imperial Palace itself, he stands as a paragon of loyalty and protector of the innocent, ever ready to strike back at the traitorous allies of the Warmaster. But Garro is walking a path of his own, one that may lead him to question his own place in the Imperium... and what if he, too, should falter?

This book contains James Swallow’s complete saga of Nathaniel Garro in the Horus Heresy – the audio drama series is embellished and expanded in prose, with additional scenes to represent the author’s original vision. This all serves as prelude to the events of the novella Vow of Faith, bringing Garro closer to his inescapable destiny as the first true martyr of the Lectitio Divinitatus.

You can download an excerpt of Weapon of Fate here in epub or mobi formats; or order a copy of the paperback edition right Here.

FAITH & FIRE becomes LEGEND

Last year, Hachette Partworks launched the Warhammer 40,000 Legends Collection (which I blogged about Here), a bi-weekly part-work publication that is re-releasing selected Warhammer 40,000 and Horus Heresy titles in a collectible hardback format with new material and bonus content. This week's issue #16 (on sale on the 5th of April) sees the release of the first title by me in series...

In the grim nightmare future of the 41st millennium, the witch-hunting zealots of the the Sisters of Battle stand between humanity and damnation. From the elite Seraphim warriors to the berserk Sisters Repentia, they are the strong arm of the Ecclesiarchy and the brutal hammer of witches. When dangerous psychic heretic Torris Vaun escapes from her custody, Seraphim Miriya is disgraced in the eyes of her fellow sisters and superiors. Following Vaun's trail to the planet Neva, Miriya takes her sisters in pursuit and, along with Hospitalier Sister Verity, starts her investigations. When they uncover a terrifying plot that could threaten the future of the Imperium, is Miriya's and Verity's faith strong enough for them to triumph?

Faith & Fire has been out of print for some time, and this handsome hardcover edition looks very cool. Check out the Legends Collection site Here, or the Hachette on-line store Here where you can order individual titles.

Humble Heresy & Black Library Reloaded

You may have heard of Humble Bundle; it's a digital storefront for games, ebooks and other stuff that not only allows people to get some excellent discounts on stuff (for a limited time) but also helps support worthy charities - and you get to pay as much or as little as you want.

And for around the next 13 days, the folks at Black Library are working with the Humble Bundle team to make a very cool Horus Heresy package available, which will benefit the UNHCR refugee agency (along with any other charity organization you mught like to help out). There are price points at $1, $8 and $15 which unlock multiple novels, audio dramas, comics and other stuff.

The $1 pack features the first five Horus Heresy novels, including my book The Flight of the Eisenstein and my audio story Oath of Moment. $8 gets you the next five books in the series, including Tales of Heresy which features a short story by me and the Garro audio drama Sword of Truth. Shell out $15 or more and get five more novels, including my 2nd Heresy book Nemesis and the audio Legion of One. It's all DRM-free, nearly $380's worth of fiction on sale as cheap as bio-chips, and for a good cause too. Click Here to visit the site and see the whole set of stuff you can get.

And meanwhile, Black Library's web presence has respawned itself into an independant website this week, which you can visit Here, sign up for the newsletter, get some free fiction and downloadable digital wallpapers.

They've also launched Tales From The Archive, dropping the prices of classic BL fiction for a short time, and among the discounted releases is the ebook edition of my Warhammer 40,000 novel Deus Encarmine, the first in my Blood Angels series from back in 2004. Check it out Here.

Horus Heresy Weekender 2017 Schedule

I'm appearing at the official Horus Heresy event this weekend, along with a bunch of my colleagues from the Black Library...

Me, Gav Thorpe, Chris Wraight, John French, Neil Roberts and Guy Haley will be talking about our books and signing them too, over Saturday and Sunday at the Nottingham Belfry hotel. There will be some exclusive stuff available in advance of release and it's likely we'll spill some secret truths about upcoming works. I can't confirm or deny if anyone will be wearing war-pelts, though.

I'll be joining John and Guy on Saturday for the "Road To Terra" and "Black Library Preview" panels at 11:45am and 3:00pm, and on Sunday I'll be talking about "The Primarchs" with Guy, Gav and Chris from 12:30. I'll be doing book signings on both days, which will be posted outside the Scribe Station. Hardcover copies of Garro: Weapon of Fate should be available on the day.

Black Library Advent Calendar 2016

An update this weekend from the Black Library Live! 2016 event - BL are continuing their tradition of an advent calendar release for the month of December, publishing 18 eBook short stories and 6 audio dramas from December 1st to Christmas Eve.

The stories will hail from the world of Warhammer 40,000, Age of Sigmar, The Horus Heresy and Blood Bowl, and a you'll be able to pick them up individually or opt in now and get a subscription for reduced cost.

I've got a Horus Heresy short story in the mix, but for now we're keeping stuff under wraps with regards to title and content...

Across the battlefields of the Horus Heresy where brother fights brother, to the humanity's final days ten thousand years later, and from the war-torn Mortal Realms where brave heroes fight to save all from the pervasive grip of Chaos, to the astrogranite where teams of skilled Blood Bowl players vie for glory (and gold), there is one constant: great stories packed with action and drama.

That's what you'll find in the 2016 Black Library Advent Calendar, with eighteen short stories and six audio dramas telling tales from all four of these diverse worlds, filled with heroes, monsters and mayhem.

To subscribe, visit the BL website Here.

GARRO: WEAPON OF FATE cover reveal!

Another week, another cover!

I've been writing the adventures of Battle Captain Nathaniel Garro for a while now, ever since I picked up his story in my Horus Heresy novel The Flight of the Eisenstein, and over the years those tales - told in audio drama form - have become fan favourites in the saga. Last year I mixed things up a little with the publication of Vow of Faith, a novella-length prose story, but people have been asking for some time to see more of Nathaniel in book form...and so here he is.

Once again, m'colleague Neil Roberts outdoes himself with another awesome cover for Weapon of Fate, the "complete" (at least for now) saga of Garro's post-Eisenstein stories all in one volume. Important point to make here - this isn't a script book or a collection of short fiction. Weapon of Fate is a full-length novel in the Horus Heresy series that gathers together and adapts all of the audio stories (Oath of Moment, Legion of One, Burden of Duty, Ashes of Fealty, Sword of Truth and Shield of Lies) and the Vow of Faith novella into a seamless whole with new connective material and an author afterword.

Here's the blurb:

The hardback edition of Garro: Weapon of Fate will be available from Black Library in February next year and you can pre-order it here; and if you want to wait for the paperback edition, that'll be out around late Summer.

And if that's not enough? Here's a bonus cover - although it's just a temporary one for the moment...

2017 will also see Black Library re-releasing my Warhammer 40,000 Sisters of Battle stories in a new omnibus edition - more on that in the months ahead...

Warhammer 40,000 Legends Collection

Partworks are a thing over here in the UK - handsome collections that build week-by-week into something you will treasure forever, so the adverts say. When I was a kid, I got the massive New Oxford Illustrated Dictionary and The Illustrated Encyclopedia of Aircraft that way, and later when I started writing for a living I worked on The Official Star Trek Fact Files, the 007 Spy File and The Official Star Wars Fact File magazines - each issue is part of a larger whole and by the end of the run you usually have a impressive amount of material for your subscription.

Earlier in the year, the people at Hachette Partworks teamed up with Black Library to test-market The Warhammer 40,000 Legends Collection in a similar vein - each issue reprints a hardcover novel from the universe of Warhammer 40,000 and The Horus Heresy in a new larger format with bonus content, subscriber premiums and more. The test was a success, so this week (on Wednesday 7th to be exact) the full release for the collection kicks off, and you can learn all about it at the official website Here.

The Warhammer 40,000 Legends Collection is planned to run for 80 issues and it will feature a few of my novels, alongside work from m'colleagues Dan Abnett, Graham McNeill, Guy Haley, Aaron Dembski-Bowden, Chris Wraight, Gav Thorpe, Rob Sanders and others - check it out at your local newsagent or use the link to subscribe direct...

NEMESIS Collector's Edition

The ongoing hardcoverfication of Black Library's epic Horus Heresy saga continues apace, and with it this month comes the 3rd of my novels for the series and the 13th overall, the assassin drama Nemesis...

You can pick up editions of Nemesis in the original paperback version, in digital eBook format, as an audiobook read by Jonathan Keeble and now in the hardback "collector's edition", which includes additional illustrations and an afterword by me.

All versions are available at the Black Library website Here, where you'll also find audio, epub and mobi file extracts.
