Merry Deus eXmas! Get a free copy of my Deus Ex: Fallen Angel ebook!

'Twas the night before the night before Christmas, and all through the capsule hotel, not a creature was stirring, not even a gene-engineered augmented rodent.

Yup, it's Deus eXmas again, and mes amis over in Quebec at Eidos Montreal are entering the spirit of the holiday season with a gift for all good mech-head boys and panzer girls!

fallenangel

Last year, when Deus Ex: Human Revolution - The Director's Cut was released, folks who bought the game direct from Eidos got an exclusive pre-order bonus in the form of Fallen Angel, an eBook novelette written by me. Fallen Angel is a short prequel story centred on the popular character of Faridah Malik, and it tells the tale of how she came to be in the employ of Sarif Industries at the start of DX:HR; the story also ties into the "Shanghai Justice" mission from later in the game.

Deus Ex: Fallen Angel is now available for free from Eidos Montreal in pdf format, and you can download a copy Here.

Merry Christmas & Happy Neurojacked Year to y'all!

You Are Hearing Me Talk... about Warhammer 40,000 & William Gibson

I'm around on the web once more this month, talking about two very different subjects for two very different podcasts....

banner

Over at Fifty Shades of Geek, genial hosts EJ and Greg interviewed me about my work for the Horus Heresy series in general and my new Garro audio drama Shield of Lies in particular. Click Here to listen.

I also participated in a show broadcast on BBC Radio Five Live, as part of their 'Game On' stream presented by my old mate Adam Rosser, discussing the works of author William Gibson and his new book The Peripheral. You can click Here to listen to it as part of the Beeb's Let's Talk About Tech podcast series, and hear me talk about Gibson's influence on my writing before Adam chats to the man himself.

The Blood Angels Are Back (They Never Left)

So December is here, and I'm dreaming of a Red Christmas; a new edition of the Warhammer 40,000 Blood Angels codex - the rulebook for the tabletop miniatures game - drops this weekend and the Sons of Sanguinius get a new lease of life.

It's also the 10th anniversary of my very first Blood Angels story, and thus, what better time to spotlight the fiction I've written for the Boys in Crimson over the past few years? The stories below are all available via digital download from Black Library's website, and you may still be able to chase up the dead-tree editions in bookstores... Click on the covers for order info.

The short tale "Blood Debt" (currently only available in The Book of Blood anthology) is a prequel story setting up the villain of my first Blood Angels novels, the Deus duology, and the books themselves follow the tactical marine Rafen as his chapter falls to a schism masterminded by the forces of Chaos, which threatens civil war. "Redeemed" takes place in the aftermath, as Rafen returns home to the fortress monastery on Baal with a powerful artefact, only to face judgement at the hands of the mighty Astorath, Redeemer of the Lost; that leads into the next two novels, Red Fury and Black Tide, where the hubris of one warrior opens the chapter's heart to corruption and our hero embarks on a mission against the plans of the mad scientist Fabius Bile. Bloodline is a chapbook that shows the effects of Black Tide's shattering conclusion, and my newest Blood Angels tale, "Reflection In Blood", is set months later as Rafen returns to his sworn duties.

910111213

I've written other Blood Angel tales beyond the adventures of Brother Rafen as well; "Honours" is the story of a Blood Angel captain and the battle-honours he has won; "The Fury" looks inside the mind of a Blood Angel in the depths of his rage; "Dante: Lord of the Host" and "The Sanguinor: Exemplar of the Host" are vignettes centred around these two key lore characters; and Heart of Rage is an audio drama (also released in short story form) featuring a squad of Blood Angels venturing aboard a Tyranid hive ship on a deadly mission at the behest of the Adeptus Mechanicus.

141516

I've also written Blood Angel tales in the Horus Heresy saga - the Bloodline chapbook appears here again as it's also a 'crossover' tale that briefly links the Warhammer 40,000 character of Rafen with the Heresy-era legionary Meros, the hero of my novel Fear To Tread, which details the apocalyptic events of the Battle for Signus. And lastly, "Lost Sons" is a short story that takes place parallel to Fear To Tread, showing events on the Blood Angels homeworld of Baal and the ramifications of the battle.

The Blood Angel stories are among my most popular works and I'm often asked if I have more to come; right now, I'm developing a new narrative for Rafen that I hope to bring to the page in the future; but for now, read on and Praise Sanguinius!

Black Library Audio Preview 2014

blap2014I've been writing audio dramas for Black Library for a couple of years now and as biased as I might be, it's worth saying that there's some very cool audio stuff out there in the worlds of Warhammer Fantasy, Warhammer 40,000 and the Horus Heresy.

This week, to showcase some of the best of BL's adventures across the formats of audio books, audio dramas and full cast audio plays, there's a free preview available for streaming or download at the Black Library site. The preview is a full 70 minutes of action and adventure, which includes an excerpt from my Horus Heresy story Oath of Moment, featuring the character of Nathaniel Garro.

You'll also hear extracts from the audiobooks of Rebirth, The Talon of Horus and Horus Rising; the Gotrek and Felix audio drama Curse of the Everliving and Warhammer 40,000 story Blood in the Machine; and a sample from BL's new episodic series The Tranzia Rebellion.

To visit the site, click Here. Alternatively, you can find the streaming audio link Here and the direct download Here.

Destination Star Trek 3 is this weekend!

It's been a good while since I last did a pure-bred Star Trek convention and this weekend I get to go boldly once more at Destination Star Trek 3 over the weekend of October 3rd-5th at the ExCel Centre in London...

DSTL041612

Along with my colleague and fellow Star Trek novelist Una McCormack, I'll be at DST3 on Saturday 4th October, and we'll both be appearing on the "Simon & Schuster Author Q&A Panel" on the Excelsior stage from 2:45pm to 3:30pm. We'll be talking about our previous work on Star Trek, including our collaboration on The Fall miniseries last year, and also dropping some hints about our upcoming Trek projects for 2015.

And after we're done at the Q&A, Una and I will then decamp to the Simon & Schuster sales stand in the Publication Alley area of the event to sign books for a while, so come along and say hello!

Entry to the Excelsior Stage is free for all DST3 attendees, but you need a general entry ticket for the event; for more information about Destination Star Trek 3, click Here.

You Are Hearing Me Talk... To The Official Star Trek Axanar Podcast

I never cease to be amazed by the amount of creative energy that Star Trek fans put into their 'fan-works' and in recent years one of the things that has come on in leaps and bounds are the fan films produced by volunteer-only actors, technicians and writers. One such production that caught my eye is Star Trek: Axanar,  a Classic Trek-era movie being developed to tell the story of the Four Years War - a pivotal battle between the Federation and the Klingon Empire, hinted at in TOS episodes such as "Court Martial" and "Whom Gods Destroy" and detailed in the old FASA roleplaying game supplement of the same name.

ax-007-th-720

As part of the run-up for the Axanar movie, the team behind it produced the excellent Prelude To Axanar, an 'in-universe' mock Discovery Channel-type documentary about the battle - and you can check that out Here.

Meanwhile, work continues apace on the full-blown prodution, and as part of the project the folks over at the Trek FM network are hosting a regular podcast about Star Trek: Axanar. I was pleased to be invited on to talk with hosts Christopher Jones and Alec Peters about my love of classic Star Trek lore, war stories and more. I also drop a few hints about some of my upcoming novels...

To listen to the podcast, click Here to visit the Trek FM site, or find the Axanar podcast on iTunes and Stitcher.

Shield of Lies audio drama excerpt & pre-orders

BoxFrontThe next installment in my ongoing series of Horus Heresy audio drama adventures featuring Nathaniel Garro is on its way; Shield of Lies is a multi-disc edition featuring over two hours of storyline starring Toby Longworth as Garro, with guest-stars Jane Collingwood, Jonathan Keeble and David Timson, and a bonus disc including digital artwork wallpapers and a pdf of the recording script.

While the war rages on across the galaxy, for many on the Throneworld of Terra it exists only in rumour and hearsay.

But in the course of her daily duties, humble adept Katanoh Tallery discovers evidence of a conspiracy within the monolithic Administratum - surely, this can only be the precursor to a traitor attack on the Solar System itself!

Fleeing into the shadows, she soon finds herself at the mercy of the mysterious Knight Errant Nathaniel Garro. Will this stalwart defender of mankind be her saviour, or her executioner?

The all-digital MP3 release will go live on December 5th, with the shiny disc edition available soon after - but the physical release version will be on sale early at the Warhammer Fest and Black Library Weekender III events in October and November respectively. I'll be at both events, and will be more than happy to sign any copies.

You can pre-order Shield of Lies over at the Black Library website Here, and on that page you can also check out an exclusive audio excerpt from the story as well.

Destination-Star-Trek-3-LondonA new convention update; I've talked around this a bit recently, but now it's official - I'm going to be a guest at the big Destination Star Trek 3 convention taking place over the weekend of October 3rd-5th at the ExCel Centre in London.

I'll be there on Saturday 4th October with Star Trek books publisher Simon & Schuster, signing my novels at the sales stand in the Publication Alley area of the event.

I'll also be taking part in an Author Panel where I'll talk about my current and future Star Trek projects (including my next Star Trek: Titan novel Sight Unseen) and taking questions - that will be the “Star Trek Novelists Q&A" taking place on Saturday between 2:45pm and 3:30pm on the Excelsior Stage (which is free to enter for all DST3 attendees). Ask The Author at GoodReads

ask-the-authorSo I've been signed up the the GoodReads site as an author for a while now and aside from flailing about with the booklist and using it to mirror posts from my blog, I haven't employed it that much.

But now, as well as adding an up-to-date events list, I've also toggled the Ask The Author function, which means if you're signed up as a GoodReads reader, you can put me to the question as the mood takes you.

You can find the page Here.

I'll do my best to answer in what will probably be an irregular and mercurial manner... (Answers may contain sarcasm and/or enthusing). And of course, if you're not a GoodReads person, you can always ask me things here at this blog.

Blood Angels: Quick Reads Collection out now

Blood-AngelsQR
Black Library launched a new ebook collection series this week, another gathering of stuff old and new about Warhammer 40,000's greatest warriors, the Adeptus Astartes.

Each one of these "Quick Reads" eBook collections is themed on a different chapter of the Space Marines, collecting short stories, novellas and more.

And of course, my boys in crimson are represented in style; the Blood Angels: Quick Reads Collection...

The Blood Angels are noble and glorious, but marked by twin curses, dark secrets that drive them to bloodthirst and berserk rage, as dangerous to allies as to enemies.

This collection includes my short stories The Sanguinor: Exemplar of the Host, Dante: Lord of the Host and Redeemed, as well as the complete test of the limited edition Bloodline chapbook I wrote for Games Day 2010. It also features Astorath the Grim: Redeemer of the Lost by Andy Smillie and Eclipse of Hope by David Annandale.

To get your digital download of the Blood Angels: Quick Reads Collection, click Here.

You can also check out other collections featuring the Dark Angels, Flesh Tearers, Imperial Fists, White Scars and Ultramarines chapters at the Black Library website.

Lon Con 3

Loncon3-lrg1The World Science Fiction Convention returns to the UK this week with LonCon 3, out at the ExCel Centre in Docklands, and I'm going along on Friday 15th and Saturday 16th to hang out, talk about stuff, sign things and seek out all kinds of fun.

To learn more about the event, visit the website Here.

If you would like to find me during the weekend, here's where I'll be and what I'll be up to:

FRIDAY
Kaffeeklatsch
3:00pm - 4:00pm, London Suite 4
Come along and ask me anything about my writing, my work in games, or anything else for that matter. I may even attempt a reading. I will do my best to be polite and interesting. (Warning: may not actually contain politeness)
For information on sign-ups for the Kaffeeklatsches, check Here - or just, y'know, turn up.

Medieval Languages and Distant Vistas: Using The Past in Games
8:00pm - 9:00pm, Capital Suite 16
Although we might not notice it, history plays a huge part in modern gaming. Not only historical games such as Medieval War, but worlds created using our perspective of 'historical times', fantasy landscapes where the people speak with odd, archaic accents or cast spells created in ancient tongues. Why is history so important to games, and how is it used? Should we take more historical care in the way we present these people, places and tongues, and what sort of potential does the recreation of the past have for gaming worlds

SATURDAY
Autographing 1 - James Swallow
1:30pm - 3:00pm, Autographing Space
I will freely write my name on stuff for you, cheques and binding contracts exempt.

From Indie to AAA
4:30pm - 6:00pm, Capital Suite 16
Should Indie games aim for AAA status, or are they better off as a forum for arts and creative development? Can the two live together?

Thoughtful Play - using complex ideas in game development
6:00pm - 7:00pm, London Suite 2
Indie gaming, in videogames, board and cardgame genres is becoming a hugely important part of gaming, and is arguably changing the ways that games are understod. Importantly, the themes of love, friendship and connection are often core parts of these games, which investigate the ways that we understand key moments in our lives, as well as being entertaining and fun. Here we examine how indie games are capable of exploring complex ideas in games.

24 deadline uk copies smallThe time is 5:00 PM.

One hour ago, federal agent Jack Bauer was declared a fugitive. If he wants to survive, he must get out of the country, and he doesn’t have much time.

With his former colleagues in the Counter Terrorist Unit now dead, under arrest, or shut down, Jack has no resources to call upon, no back-up, and nowhere to go—only his determination can drive him on. One thing remains clear to him: the promise he made to his daughter Kim. Jack vows that he will see Kim one last time to tell her he loves her...before he drops off the radar forever.

Meanwhile, a hastily-assembled FBI task force sets out to track down and capture Jack, even as a covert operations unit of Russia’s SVR sets out to do the same - only the remit of the Russians is to kill on sight.

As the clock runs down, Jack must face old friends and past enemies in a desperate race to stay one step ahead of the hunters, leaving them with a grim warning -

Stay out of my way, and I’ll be gone within 24 hours. You’ll never see me again. Come after me...and you’ll regret it.

Death And Defiance and also Coventry

Death-and-DefianceThere's a new Horus Heresy anthology on the horizon, and it's called Death And Defiance. I've got an all-new original short story in it, along with tales from other Black Library writers such as Nick Kyme, Aaron Dembski-Bowden, Guy Haley and Andy Smillie.

The blurb says:
This anthology contains five exclusive stories from across the battlefields of the Horus Heresy.

Each tale ties into one of the major arcs of the series so far: we follow a splinter of the scattered Night Lords Legion towards Ultramar, join a pack of Space Wolves despatched on a mission from the Wolf Lord, and gain a glimpse into the inner motivations of an assassin tasked with the elimination of one of the traitor Primarchs.

Words alone can no longer convey the horrors of the war that now grips the Imperium. In what should have been an age of enlightenment and glorious triumph, instead warriors from both sides reel from the twin agonies of betrayal and bloodshed; those still fighting on the front lines, and those long forgotten by those they might once have called brother.

Death And Defiance is a hardcover release that will be available through BL's Exclusive Products range from October 13th, but you'll be able to pick it up a couple of day early if you're at the Warhammer Fest event, which has also just been announced for Saturday 11th October at the Ricoh Arena in Coventry.

All five of us writers in the anthology are going to be at the event, so it's the ideal opportunity to get the book signed by the lot of us. In addition to signings, there's also going to be seminars, games demos, and a big sales space with lots of merch.

First Contact Day 2015

A new date for the diary; this one's a way off yet - the 4th-5th of April to be exact - but seasoned Trekkers out there will naturally recognize that weekend as the one where Zefram Cochrane made (um...will make) first contact with the Vulcans in the movie Star Trek: First Contact.

fcdbanner
And so, what better date on which to run a Star Trek event?

First Contact Day 2015
is a fan-run convention being held at the National Space Centre in Leicester, and I'm going to be there along with my fellow author and Star Trek: The Fall co-writer Una McCormack. Actors Garret Wang (from Star Trek Voyager) and Claudia Christian (from Babylon 5) will also be appearing. There will be guest talks, Q&A's, photo shoots, signings as well as a special "dinner with the stars" - as long as I can be pried away from the NSC's cool exhibits first...

Star Trek: Titan - the next voyage...

It's official: my editor at Pocket Books has given me permission to formally announce that I am writing a new novel in the Star Trek: Titan series, carrying on the adventures of the crew of the Starship Titan.
titanatwarp

This will be my third novel featuring Will Riker, Deanna Troi, Christine Vale, Tuvok and the rest of the Titan crew, following on from 2009's Synthesis and last year's entry in the Star Trek: The Fall miniseries The Poisoned Chalice.

In the weeks and months ahead, I'll be talking more about this novel - but for now I'll leave you with a reveal of this new book's title...

UK Games Expo this weekend!

This weekend, gamers will be gathering for the UK Games Expo event at the NEC Hilton Metropole hotel, for one of the biggest celebrations of board games, card games and miniatures games in the country..

...and I am very pleased to be attending the event for the first time as a guest; I am of course expecting to squander a foolish amount of money in the dealer's room, as well as finding some actual games to particpate in. I've heard a lot of great things about UK Games Expo and I'm really looking forward to taking part!

I'll be taking part in a writer's panel over the weekend and I'll have a table in the "Library" area of the event where I'll be available to sign autographs, chat and sell my books, so if you're coming along, please stop by and say hello.

For more information about the event, visit the official website Here.

24: Deadline is approaching...

The Following Blog Takes Place Between 11.00am and 12.00pm. Events Occur In Real Time.

"Right now, Forge Books are planning to release a thriller novel written by me. It is based on the award-winning television series
24... and I'm pretty damn stoked about it. I'm New York Times Bestselling novelist James Swallow, and today is the longest day of my life."

Action hero Jack Bauer returns this week in the new television series 24: Live Another Day, set four years after the events of 24's eighth season - and I've written Deadline, a novel that bridges the gap between the last turbulent day of Jack's life and this latest adventure...

I'll be talking more about this project in the months ahead, but for know, here's the back cover blurb...

The time is 5:00 PM.

24: Deadline will be on sale on August 5th and is available to pre-order in hardback and Kindle formats. For more information, click Here.
