The Complete Cyberman

Back in 2005, m'colleague Nick Briggs (Doctor Who writer, actor and voice of many of the galaxy's greatest bad guys) wrote an audio miniseries centered around one of the Doctor's most iconic monsters - the Cybermen. In a darker story without the timelord involved, Cyberman was a science-fiction political drama in four episodes and it was popular enough that a second volume was planned.

But being the super-busy guy he is, Nick couldn't find the time to write Cyberman 2, so that gig was offered to me in 2009. I got to pick up where Nick's story left off and write a taut thriller about invasion, occupation and radicalization - and it remains one of my favourite pieces of work.

And so, it's great to see that Cyberman: The Complete Series 1 & 2 is returning in a compilation edition in May; you can read the official press release over at the Big Finish website Here, or click Here to pre-order the box-set on CD or digital formats.

SCI FI Bromley on Saturday

Ah, Bromley; you might not think it, but this leafy London suburb has always a dash of science fiction running through its streets. HG Wells spent a troubled childhood there before going on to write The Time Machine and War of the Worlds. Ziggy Stardust himself, David Bowie, lived there in the 50's. And if you want to stretch the definition, even children's author and local lass Enid Blyton flirted with SF concepts in some of her novels.

So it's kinda cool that this Saturday, a couple of time machines (specifically a TARDIS and the one from the 1960's movie of the same name) will be materializing there, along with me and a bunch of other folks for the inaugural SCI FI Bromley show; there's also a concert planned for the evening, where the Lewisham Concert Band will play a set of famous SF themes.

The event runs from 11:00am to 6:00pm at the Great Hall in the Bromley Civic Centre.

As well as a display of props, sales stands and cosplay stuff going on, I'll be there signing books and taking part in Q&A panels with fellow authors Graham Guy and Graham Austin-King at 12:15pm and 3:15pm.

Also appearing at the show are Jami Reid-Quarrell from Doctor Who and Star Wars alumni Nick Joseph, Ted Western, Alan Flyng, Barrie Holland, Laurie Goode, Brian Muir and Stephanie English.

Entry to the show is free and tickets for the concert are £18, with proceeds going to charities Connect and the The National Brain Appeal.

For more information about the event, check out the website Here.

Fourteen'd

Like I was last year, I'm a little late with the first of my annual series of year-ending blog postings, and the reason is pretty much the same. 2014, like 2013, has been a tough one to assimilate. Without wanting to start off 2015 on a sour note, I kept getting reminded last year of a line from Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull, where Indy says that sooner or later we all reach an age "where life stops giving us things and starts taking them away". Last year there was a lot of bad with the good, and the thing is, you tend to dwell on the bad stuff because that's what leaves the scar.
(And for the record? I thought Crystal Skull was a decent Indy movie. Seriously, if you're still getting your knickers in a twist over ancient aliens in the same milieu where angry Ark of the Covenant angels melt people or immortal knights exist, just let it go. But I won't quibble over the Shia/Monkeys thing, though.)
So; all of that is a long way of saying "Farewell 2014. Don't come back."

So what did I write last year? 2014 saw more than its fair share of crashing and burning, I have to be honest. I slaved away on something very important that went exactly nowhere, which reminded me about how a lot of what writers do comes out of sheer bloody-mindedness, that I [REDACTED] hate [REDACTED] and they should all [REDACTED], and most importantly, to just keep writing. In the crazy world of videogames, I had an awesome superhero project shot out from underneath the studio I was working for, and months later it still burns, damn it. But that's teh gamez for you, and out of the ashes of that came something even cooler which I am not yet allowed to talk about, but I will say it's something I've wanted to work on for a very long time. More on that in the months ahead. For fun, I penned some script shorts on spec, and a couple of new Horus Heresy audio dramas - Shield of Lies, which is out now, and Ashes of Fealty, which will be properly announced in the weeks ahead. I delivered Deadline, my first 24 novel and first action-thriller to deadline at the start of the year (see what I did there?), and a new Star Trek: Titan adventure called Sight Unseen, which will actually be seen some time in the Autumn. Lastly, I wrote the short stories "Gunsight" for the Death And Defiance anthology, "Reflection In Blood" for the Black Library Advent Calendar and a new Doctor Who tale which I'll talk more about later in the year. So, busy in spite of it all. On the edge. *snaps fingers* Where I gotta be. *snaps fingers*

I roved a bit in 2014 too, book-ending the year with panels about games with the great Animex festival at the start, and the now-annual "games writing thing" at the London University of the South Bank at the end; other game-related highlights were getting to crash both the Destiny launch and Eurogamer Expo, and getting deep in boardgame stuff at the UK Games Expo. As well as a couple of Black Library-centred events (Warhammer Fest and a blink-and-you'd-miss-me at Black Library Weekender III), I showed my face at the Worldcon in London - it's my hometown after all, it would have been churlish not to - but I reckon the best gig of the year was Destination Star Trek 3, which was warmly welcoming and just all-around nice to guest at. Travelling in 2014 saw me in Malta, soaking up history and getting too much sun, and San Francisco, where I met Yoda; and last but not least, closer to home, I pegged my fun-o-meter at the Red Bull Air Race, which was, quite certainly, hypercool.

And now onwards.

Something Borrowed (2014 Edition)

It's that gift-after-Christmas that comes to scribes around the nation: the Public Lending Right. If you are a writer/editor/illustrator/etc, a resident of the UK or Ireland and you ever need a reason for donating your books to the library - on top of all the obvious ones like promoting reading and supporting this valuable and increasingly undermined public service - here it is.

What is the PLR?
The PLR is a system where authors who've written books that are in public libraries get a little revenue each time somebody borrows their works. It's a way to repay writers who won't be earning a royalty from a  sale in a bookstore. The hardworking folks at the PLR office pay a nominal fee based on how borrowed you were - and in the interests of fairness, you can't earn more than around £6000, so the big names don't get to hog all the money.
In the current political climate, both the PLR and the libraries it springs from are under threat, so if you are a writer or a reader, please do your bit to help support both as best you can.

Here's my Top Ten Library Loans of my novels for 2013 (with 2012's position in brackets)
1      (1)   Peacemaker
2      (-)    Fear To Tread
3      (4)   Hammer & Anvil
4      (3)   Nemesis
5      (2)   The Flight of the Eisenstein
6      (5)   Red Fury
7      (7)   Cast No Shadow
8      (6)   Icarus Effect
9      (8)   The Blood Angels Omnibus
10    (9)   Synthesis

Once again, my Doctor Who Western Peacemaker maintains its top slot in the chart, although my most recent Horus Heresy novel Fear To Tread was a close second place.

As always, my thanks to everyone who supported their local libraries and borrowed my books...

Thirteen Not Out

It’s taken me a few days to get around to writing the first of my annual New Year posts, mostly because 2013 has been a tough one to assimilate.

I went into last year thinking about times past and stuff done; see, 2013 was the year in which the original edition of Cyberpunk (one of my favourite role-playing games) was set, and off the back of that gameworld I spent around a decade of gaming in the same campaign with chums of mine who I still count as good friends today. Of course, 2013 hit and I wasn’t augmented with neural implants and cool cyberware, so that was a downer. But as this year drew on, it became a mix of lows and highs that have left me still trying to map it all.

Our family lost someone this year, and it happened in a matter of months. Add that to health scares for both my folks (which passed, thankfully) and illness closer to home, and 2013 left me feeling the very real weight of mortality...as well as reminding me to never, ever take anything in life for granted. So in that way, I’m glad to see the back of this unlucky number and turn the page.

But with the bad comes the good, and there was some of that too. 2013 was the 50th anniversary of Doctor Who, and I was pleased to be asked to contribute something to AudioGo’s Destiny of The Doctor miniseries as part of that celebration – I wrote Shockwave, a 7th Doctor story narrated by Sophie Aldred, and it was fun to drop back into the Time Lord’s world after being away for a while. Out on the Final Frontier, I wrote my first dedicated digital work, a Star Trek: The Next Generation ebook novella called The Stuff of Dreams and then contributed the penultimate book to The Fall miniseries with The Poisoned Chalice; to my delight, Poisoned Chalice made it on to the New York Times bestseller’s list, making my third NYT charter. I did a little less this year for the Grim Dark future of Warhammer 40,000 and The Horus Heresy with five new short stories for The Imperial Truth, Angels of Death and Lords of the Space Marines collections – and talking of short stories, I also had another first with a tale I wrote for the Kaiju Rising: Age of Monsters Kickstarter project. But perhaps the biggest writing milestone of 2013 for me was finishing up a personal project that I’ve been working on, on and off, since 2010. More on that – I hope – in the months to come.

In videogames, I got to work on a mobile title for the first time, scriptwriting for Deus Ex: The Fall, a game sequel to my tie-in novel Deus Ex: Icarus Effect. In addition, as part of the release for the Director’s Cut of Deus Ex: Human Revolution, I wrote Fallen Angel, another ebook to connect with the gameworld. Of course, most of what I was doing game-wise in 2013 remained under an ironclad Non-Disclosure Agreement until very recently when the existence of the as-yet-untitled Deus Ex 4 was officially announced; but by the same token, a big techno-fantasy action-RPG I spent many months working on was cancelled, reinstated, cancelled again, retooled and reinstated again and then finally definitively cancelled, this time for keeps.

Outside of work, I did less big events this year (just the Horus Heresy Weekender, Black Library Weekender II and Nine Worlds convention) but in return I had great vacations in the Canary Islands and the military museums of the Southeast; I got cross paths with cool folks like Rowland White, Joss Whedon and David Goyer, I learned archery...

But right now, if you ask me to guess at what 2014 holds, I can’t tell you. All I’m sure of is, it’s going be different.

Doctor Who: Shockwave is coming...

On sale next month is my new Doctor Who audio drama story, Shockwave - it's episode seven in the ongoing Destiny of the Doctor miniseries produced by Big Finish Productions and AudioGo as part of their contributions to the Doctor's 50th Anniversary celebrations.

Shockwave features the characters of the 7th Doctor and Ace in a sci-fi disaster movie set aboard a starship racing to escape the death of a collapsing star; the story is narrated by Sophie Aldred and co-stars Ian Brooker.

In the far future, the inhabitants of Tarsus Six face a desperate struggle to evacuate their world before their sun, Tarsus Ultra, collapses into a cataclysmic spatial anomaly.

When the Doctor navigates the TARDIS to a space station orbiting Tarsus Six, Ace assumes that he intends offer their assistance. But it soon becomes clear that the Doctor has an agenda of his own.

With the TARDIS immobilised, Ace realises that their own lives are as much in danger as those of the fleeing inhabitants. The race is on to escape the destruction of Tarsus Six and the devastating shockwave that will follow, reaching out and destroying everything in its wake.

Doctor Who: Destiny of the Doctor - Shockwave is now up for pre-order over at the Big Finish site, and it will be available in CD and digital form direct from release.

A TARDIS and a sip of G & T

No new stuff to blog about for weeks and then a bunch of things come along at once...

As well as announcing the forthcoming release of my latest novel Enigma downblog, I can now also reveal that I've written a brand new original audio drama for the 50th anniversary of everyone's favourite timelord, Doctor Who.

The big 5-0 for the Doctor this year means there's a lot of cool stuff coming out to celebrate his half-century and as part of that, production companies AudioGo and Big Finish have come together to create an eleven-part episodic series of monthly releases called Doctor Who: Destiny of the Doctor.

Why eleven episodes, you may ask? That's one for every incarnation of the Doctor, one story told in the style of Big Finish's 'Companion Chronicle' tales featuring each version of the Doc from William Hartnell through to Matt Smith. I've written a tale of the Seventh Doctor called Shockwave, which will be out in July.

Here's the full list of episodes:
Hunters of Earth (by Nigel Robinson), Shadow of Death (by Simon Guerrier), Vengeance of the Stones (by Andrew Smith), Babblesphere (by Jonathan Morris), Smoke and Mirrors (by Steve Lyons), Trouble in Paradise (by Nev Fountain), Shockwave (by James Swallow), Enemy Lines (by Alan Barnes), Night of the Whisper (by Cavan Scott and Mark Wright), Death’s Deal (by Darren Jones) and The Time Machine (by Matt Fitton).

I'll talk more about Shockwave in the weeks to come; but in the meantime I'll be talking about other stuff this Sunday afternoon (the 13th, from 2.00pm GMT) on the G & T Show live podcast.

Specifically, Star Trek stuff like my upcoming Star Trek: The Next Generation eBook The Stuff of Dreams and a new novel I'm working of called The Poisoned Chalice, featuring Will Riker and the crew of the U.S.S. Titan as part of a five-book miniseries called The Fall.

Check out the G & T Show's website Here, complete with downloads of their previous episodes.

You can also post questions for me on the G & T forum Here or log on directly to the Livestream Here on Sunday afternoon.

Twelve'd

The year ends, not with a bang, but with a long, drawn-out sigh. You know the kind, the one you emit when you slip into a nice, warm bath? That noise is 2012’s workload slipping off my shoulders and the sudden arrival of a moment where I can stop and actually hear myself think. My Yuletide break gave me some much-needed downtime to appreciate the events of the past twelve months and reflect on where I want to go in the new year.

A whole bunch of stuff by me hit the stores this year; my third Horus Heresy novel Fear To Tread, which was a huge hit, and the second omnibus of my Warhammer 40,000 Blood Angels books. In fact, I wrote a whole lot of stuff from the grimdark world of the 41st millennium, with several eBooks, short stories, novellas, scriptbooks and foreign-language editions; I also did a couple of Horus Heresy audio dramas, Burden of Duty and Sword of Truth. Elsewhere in the audio medium, the Stargate series I’d been writing and editing since 2010 was finally released in two box sets, the first featuring my episode Half Life. I didn’t neglect videogames either, having co-written the Xbox 360 Kinect game Fable: The Journey.

It seemed like ever other weekend was a convention or an event of some sort – from the great Doctor Who and SF conventions run by the Starfury team, lit-cons like Olympus and Alt.Fiction, the multiple Black Library events in Chicago and all over the UK – but the highlight of those was the brilliant BL Expo over in Chestermere, just outside of Calgary in Alberta. A bunch of us authors made the trip to Canada’s great white north and we were delighted by the warmth of the welcome.

It was also a decent year for accolades; I got nominated for BAFTA’s Best Story videogames award for my work on Deus Ex: Human Revolution, and while we sadly didn’t bring home the gold, DXHR did go on to rope in a whole bunch of other gongs, including the Canadian Videogames Award for Best Writing. I also made it on to the New York Times Bestsellers list for the second time in my career, with Fear To Tread; the book also topped the UK’s science-fiction and fantasy charts, beating out the entire Game of Thrones saga and The Hobbit for first place. I was pretty damned pleased about that.

I think I’m also going to remember 2012 as the year tabletop gaming came back into my life with a vengeance (I’m looking at you, Wil Wheaton), and it was a welcome return. I also don’t want to think about how much money I’ve spend on board games since last January.

So looking forward to 2013 means new Star Trek projects, with my eBook The Stuff of Dreams out in March and my participation in the new “event” miniseries The Fall later in the year. There will be more Warhammer 40,000 and Horus Heresy fiction to come, and I’m hoping my long-delayed Blake’s 7: The Liberator Chronicles story will finally see light of day. In the weeks and months ahead I’ll also be announcing the release of a new novel based on series I’ve never worked on before, and a cool tie-in to the anniversary of a certain traveller in time and space; and I may just be able to reveal more about the epic top secret videogames projects I’ve been working on…
