Merry Deus Exmas - Deus Ex: The Fall special offer
As a year-end special offer, the folks at Square Enix are making Deus Ex: The Fall available for iOS gamers at the princely sum of just 99p over at the iTunes Store, which at 85% off is as cheap as bio-chips (US and European gamers can get it for just under a buck/euro too). This festive price augmentation will last until January 2nd 2014, so get it while its, um, cold.
Set in the same world as Deus Ex: Human Revolution, The Fall is an action-RPG and features characters and situations from my tie-in novel Deus Ex: Icarus Effect. The plotline of the mobile game carries on directly after the events of the book, with players taking on the role of former Belltower mercenary and ex-SAS soldier Ben Saxon. In The Fall, Saxon is pulled into conflict with the members of his former team, the Tyrants - a ruthless group of augmented assassins - as he uncovers a conspiracy behind the production of an anti-rejection drug vital to those who have cybernetic augmentations.

NYT3!
It is with great pleasure and no little amount of pride I can announce today that my latest novel Star Trek: The Fall - The Poisoned Chalice has made the New York Times Bestseller List for December 15th 2013.
This is my third time on the list (previously I made the grade with my Horus Heresy novels Nemesis and Fear To Tread) but this is the first time one of my Star Trek works hit the chart, and I'm elated!
I would like to thank everyone who has bought a copy the book, and all the Star Trek fans out there who have been very supportive of the whole The Fall miniseries; I also want to tip my hat to all the great writers who I've worked with on these books - David R. George III, Una McCormack, David Mack and Dayton Ward.
Being part of this group endeavour with these folks has been a blast - and for those of you who have followed the books to this point, I can promise that Dayton's grand finale Peaceable Kingdoms (out later this month) is going to bring everything to a dynamic conclusion.

Then, on Sunday I'm taking part in a panel about writing for videogames at the London Screenwriters' Festival 2013 at Regent’s School of Drama, Film & Media in Regent's University.
The panel is called "Writing For Games: The Future Of Entertainment" and I'll be there with game journalist Guy Cocker, Sarah Wellock from Sony Entertainment Europe and Tameem Antoniades of Ninja Theory. The panel will be in the Room Tuke Cinema from 5.00pm; click Here for further details.

Deus Ex: Fallen Angel & the future of the Deus Ex Universe
Over the past few months I've been working on some top secret videogames projects that iron-clad non-disclosure agreements have forbidden me from talking about...
But now, official word has been given and I'm able to reveal some news about my current involvement with the Deus Ex saga.
My boss David Anfossi (studio head over at Eidos Montreal) put out a blog over at the EM site (click Here to read it in full) where he talks about Deus Ex Universe, an ongoing plan for future games across multiple platforms and spin-off projects in other media.
I've seen a few of the ideas that are circulating inside EM right now for DXU and there's some very cool stuff being discussed...
Where this all kicks off is with the release of the Deus Ex: Human Revolution Directors Cut, now officially confirmed for the 22nd of this month for all NTSC regions and the 25th for PAL regions.
The DXHR:DC is an uprated and improved edition of the original game, with new graphic fidelity, retooled boss fights and a developer's commentary option. It'll also include The Missing Link DLC and retailer-exclusive 'Tong's Rescue' missions seamlessly integrated into the narrative.
It's great to see this "utimate" edition of DXHR out in the wild, and I can now also announce there will be an exclusive to the Square Enix Online Store in the form of Deus Ex: Fallen Angel, an original eBook novelette written by me.
Fallen Angel is a prequel tale set before the events of Deus Ex: Human Revolution, and tells the story of fan-favourite character Faridah Malik in the days before her recruitment as Adam Jensen's pilot for Sarif Industries.
Deus Ex: Human Revolution Directors Cut will be available on Wii U, Xbox 360, Playstation 3 and Windows PC platforms, with support for Wii U Gamepad, Smartglass and PS Vita; a Mac edition will follow in the months ahead.
But Fallen Angel and the Director's Cut are only part of the ongoing plans for Deus Ex; the DXU announcement also officially reveals that an all-new game for next-generation consoles and PC is currently in development at EM, and I'm pleased to be involved with the script and story for this forthcoming interation of the series.

Target Achieved! Colossal Kaiju Combat comes to Kaiju Rising: Age of Monsters
Last month I mentioned that I'd joined the gang at Ragnarok Publications for their giant monster anthology KickStarter campaign, and now I'm pleased to announce that Kaiju Rising: Age of Monsters has crushed the $14,000 dollar barrier!
This means that I've officially been "unlocked" as a stretch goal author for the project, and I will be writing a new original story for the collection based on beasts from the Colossal Kaiju Combat card game produced by the good folks at Sunstone Games, with new art by the talented Matt Frank.
You can visit Sunstone's forums and take part in a vote on which mega-monsters you want to see appear in the tale - or swing by the Kaiju Rising: Age of Monsters KickStarter page Here and help it make the final push to the final $15,500 goal before Sunday October 6th (which will unlock some amazing art by legendary Godzilla artist Bob Eggleton).

Games Day / Angels of Death / The Vigil
It's Games Day UK today, a big event in the calendar for fans of the worlds of Warhammer.
The NIA in Birmingham is going to be packed with gamers and readers and sundry other folk from Games Workshop and Black Library; but not me, sadly.
I'm disappointed I couldn't be there this year, as 2013 would have marked my 10th consecutive Games Day event in the UK as a Black Library author, from my first visit back in '03 after writing my first story for Inferno! magazine.
Still, even though I'm not around, my stories are - readers can pick up a copy of Space Marines: Angels of Death, an exclusive anthology featuring a compliation of all the 1000-word eBook short stories that have been coming out all this month over at the BL website.
My contributions are a Blood Angels tale called "The Fury" and "Vigil", a Doom Eagles story.
Of course, if you can't make it along to the event, the stories are still available as individual digital downloads, and the Angels of Death series concludes today with "Vigil".

Kaiju Rising: Age of Monsters
It's a been a good year for giant monsters and the echoes of fictional
mass destruction, so perhaps it is no surprise that a project like the
short story anthology Kaiju Rising: Age of Monsters came about. The debut release of gung-ho small press Ragnarok Publications,
it's recently been the subject of a successful KickStarter campaign,
funded to it's launch target and now - with just 9 more days left to go -
well on the way to blasting through all of its stretch goals.
Kaiju Rising has a whole bunch of talented folks writing for it, including my Black Library colleagues Josh Reynolds, Clint Werner and David Annandale, as well as names like Larry Corriea, Peter Clines, James Lovegrove, Erin Hoffman... hell, even Mike Maclean, the scriptwriter behind Dinocroc vs Supergator and Sharktopus, so you know it's gonna be monster-tastic.
When I heard about the anthology, I knew immediately it was something I wanted to be involved in; giant monsters have always been part of my sci-fi landscape, from my first exposure to the kaiju phenomenon as a kid watching my hometown get trashed by Gorgo, and the AMT/Ertl Gigantics model kits that sent freakishly large bug-monsters stomping through cities. Thanks to project creators J.M. Martin and Nick Sharps, I've dusted off my membership card for the Church of Godzilla and taken up the mantle of 'stretch goal' author for the anthology, joining Kane Gilmour, Howard Andrew Jones and Peter Stenson as extra content creators for the project. If the Kaiju Rising: Age of Monsters KickStarter can make it past $14,000, I'll be penning an original story based on a popular kaiju franchise.
Check out the official KickStarter page right Here - and you too can help cancel the apocalypse...

The Fury - new Warhammer 40,000 Blood Angels ebook out now!
Previously, I mentioned the launch of the Angels of Death
series from Black Library - a set of 1000-word Space Marine "flash
fiction" stories being released all this month in the run-up to Games
Day UK 2013....
The Black Rage lurks at the heart of every Blood Angel, a dread fury beneath their civilised surface.
In the midst of battle, one of Sanguinius’s sons teeters on the edge of oblivion, a heartbeat from damnation in the grip of his Chapter’s curse.
Will he fall into that blood-soaked abyss or retain his humanity?

Star Trek: The Fall - The Poisoned Chalice cover art
The cover artwork for my latest novel The Poisoned Chalice, the fourth book in the Star Trek: The Fall miniseries has now been officially released, along the with back-cover blurb, and it's looking very cool...
That's the U.S.S. Titan in Earth orbit, the ship designed by Sean Tourangeau and rendered here by Tobias Richter. It pleases me no end that I've got what a true-blue iconic Star Trek cover - a sleek starship over a planet!
The Fall books kicked off last month with David R. George's Revelation and Dust, to be followed by Una McCormack's The Crimson Shadow, David Mack's A Ceremony of Losses, my novel and then the finale with Dayton Ward's Peacable Kingdoms. The five-book series covers a sixty day period in which the United Federation of Planets suffers a tragic attack and its explosive political fallout...
Here's the blurb:
One simple act, and the troubles of the United Federation of Planets have grown darker overnight.
The mystery behind the heinous terrorist attack that has rocked the Federation to its core grows ever deeper, and William Riker finds himself beset by rumors and half-truths as the U.S.S. Titan is ordered back to Earth on emergency orders from the admiralty.
Soon, Riker finds himself drawn into a game of political intrigue, bearing witness to members of Starfleet being detained—including people he considered friends—pending an investigation at the highest levels.
And while Riker tries to navigate the corridors of power, Titan’s tactical officer, Tuvok, is given a series of clandestine orders that lead him into a gray world of secrets, lies, and deniable operations.
Who can be trusted when the law falls silent and justice becomes a quest for revenge?
For the crew of the U.S.S. Titan, the search for answers will become a battle for every ideal the Federation stands for...

Vote for Deus Ex: The Fall!
Deus Ex: The Fall is out now on iOS for Apple devices and it'll be available for Android hardware by the end of this month; it's a first-person shooter with RPG elements set in the world of Deus Ex, and it features characters from my novel Icarus Effect and a storyline that ties in with Deus Ex: Human Revolution.
I worked on The Fall's script with developers Eidos Montreal and N-Fusion, and I'm hoping it'll make a good showing at the GJAs - and you can help make that happen by visiting the awards site Here at Computer And Videogames and clicking the 'Select' button to vote for Deus Ex: The Fall - so please vote early, vote often! Please note, you have to register at the CVG site for your vote to count...

Angels of Death ebook short stories
It's UK Games Day at the end of the month, the big annual event for the worlds of Warhammer, and as part of the run-up Black Library are releasing one flash fiction short story per day for the princely sum of 99p.
Each story in the Angels of Death series centres around one chapter of the Adeptus Astartes, the Space Marines of the Imperium of Man - as I write this the first two are already available, Graham McNeil's Ultramarines tale 'Codex' and 'Death Speakers', a story featuring the Executioners chapter by Andy Smilie. The short stories will feature not only the first founding chapters, but also some of the lesser-known successors, from writers across the Black Library stable.
I've written two stories for the Angels of Death series - one featuring the Blood Angels and one featuring the Doom Eagles - and I'll be updating the blog with more on those when they are released.
For now, check out the portal page Here and come back each day for more tales of war and heroism in the 41st Millennium...

Nine Worlds schedule (UPDATED!)
I'm going to be there, taking part on various panels and signing books, talking about videogames, writing, Star Trek, Doctor Who, Blake's 7 and more besides... Come and see me here:
Saturday 10th August
Star Trek Writers on Star Trek
3:15pm to 4:30pm, Somerset Room, Renaissance London Heathrow Hotel
Star Trek and its many franchises has spawned literally hundreds of official Tie In novels. Three writers of those novels talk about writing for trek, the rules and what the future and its multiple timelines may bring.
Reunification: Star Trek vs Star Wars
6:45pm to 8:00pm, Vanguard, Renaissance London Heathrow Hotel
There has been friendly rivalry between Star Wars and Star Trek fans for decades – now the franchises seem to be united under one General (JJ Abrams). Could this be the saviour of both, or the final nail in the coffin for one or the other?
Script Writing For Games
8:30pm to 9:45pm, Royal C & D, Radisson Blu Edwardian Heathrow Hotel
Writing in any form is an art, but script writing is something different – especially when it comes to games! Unlike other formats, gaming involves a relationship with the player, and a script has to allow for this additional 'character'. James Swallow, one of the writers for Deus Ex: Human Revolution, is joined by Rhianna Pratchett, writer of the recent Tomb Raider remake, to discuss the unique format and challenges of script writing for games.
Sunday 11th August
What Makes a Fandom?
9:00am to 9:45am, George I, Renaissance London Heathrow Hotel
Some books have that spark, that skyrocket factor that launches them into the spotlight, that gets the TV deal, the film series and the readers who collect every action figure and make their own fanworks. Some books don't. What does it take to make a fandom? Our panel decides.
Signing: Danie Ware & James Swallow
10:00am to 11:00am, Forbidden Planet table in the Vendors Room, Wessex, Renaissance London Heathrow Hotel
The Evolution of Blake's 7
3:15pm to 4:30pm, Concorde, Renaissance London Heathrow Hotel
In the last decade, Blake’s 7 has enjoyed a remarkable renaissance – first with a successful audio reboot and now with a possible major new television series. The audio reimagining featured Derek Riddell as Blake and Colin Salmon as Avon, with a host of top name actors in other roles. Now, a forthcoming 60-minute documentary reveals how the new Blake’s 7 audio series came about. In a special item on Sunday, Ben Aaronovitch and James Swallow, two writers of the new audio series, will join producer-director Andrew Mark Sewell, and Alistair Lock – the new voice of Zen – to discuss the original series and its influence, the production of the audio reboot, and what the future holds for Blake’s 7.
You can learn more about the event at the Nine Worlds website Here.

Lost Sons eBook out now
Last year's Black Library Weekender event featured a couple of limited edition hardcover anthologies featuring stories from the Worlds of Warhammer, and my contribution to that collection was "Lost Sons", a Horus Heresy tale featuring the Blood Angels, tying in to the narrative of my novel Fear To Tread.
This week, Black Library are promoting their eBook line and as part of that, "Lost Sons" is being made available for the first time in digital form for direct download to whatever tablet, mobile, desktop or hololithic data slate device you may wish to read it upon...
The Blood Angels were lured into a trap at Signus Prime by the most vile treachery imaginable, but not all of them went with Sanguinius on that fateful journey.
Keeping the home fires burning on Baal, the remaining honour guard are brought news of their primarch’s death and must decide upon the final course for their Legion themselves.

More Deus Ex News...
As any gamers who haven’t been living on the far side of the Moon will
know, the E3 expo has been taking place in Los Angeles this week, and
among the big news of launches of the new Next Gen consoles, there’s
also been stuff about a couple of games I worked on.
Deus Ex: The Fall, a new mobile/tablet title for iOS and Android is coming this Summer, and it features characters from (and is a sequel to) my Deus Ex tie-in novel Icarus Effect. Here’s the latest trailer showing story and gameplay elements...
Along with the official announcement of DXTF, developers Eidos Montreal have also revealed that the Deus Ex: Human Revolution Director’s Cut
– previously only announced for release on the Wii U console – will now
also be released on Xbox 360, Playstation 3, PC and Mac platforms.
The Director’s Cut edition of DXHR is an uprated, refined version of the original game with a whole bunch of additional material and under-the-hood tweaks. The DLC extra missions “Tong’s Rescue” and The Missing Link are now included as part of the core narrative; the boss fights have been overhauled and re-pathed with multiple avenues for solution, game balance and combat have been refined along with improved AI and visual fidelity, and last but not least, the Director’s Cut includes over 8 hours of developer commentary. There’s ‘second screen’ functionality for the Wii U with it’s handheld controller tablet, and that will also be available for the Xbox 360 version via the Smartglass app and on the Playstation Vita for the PS3 version. The Deus Ex: Human Revolution Director’s Cut hits later this year.
For more information, check out this E3 interview with Gamespot, which shows off gameplay from both games.

When the Doctor navigates the TARDIS to a space station orbiting Tarsus Six, Ace assumes that he intends offer their assistance. But it soon becomes clear that the Doctor has an agenda of his own.

Deus Ex: The Fall is coming...
One of the top secret things I've been working on over the past few
months has now been officially announced, so I can talk about my
involvement with Deus Ex: The Fall, a new videogame for tablet and mobile devices.
Set in 2027, in the same world as Deus Ex: Human Revolution, The Fall is an action-RPG and features characters and situations from my tie-in novel Deus Ex: Icarus Effect.
Check out the official announcement trailer:
Deus Ex: The Fall was developed by Square Enix’s Mobile division in Europe, in collaboration with the original DXHR
team at Eidos-Montréal and N-Fusion; I worked with the mobile team
developing the storyline and the script, and I have to say it's pretty
cool for me to see characters I created in a novel coming to life in the
gameworld.
Deus Ex: The Fall will initially be released for iOS devices this summer, with an Android platform release soon to follow. For more information, check out the official Deus Ex website Here.

Enigmatic
Back in January I mentioned that I have a new original novel called Enigma coming out in May, as part of the world of the Tannhäuser board game; Tannhäuser takes place a dieselpunk alternate history set in a 1950's world where the First World War never ended, and the global powers fight an endless conflict using super-science, dark magic and recovered alien technology...
The free nations have joined together to form the Union under the keen leadership of President Thomas Edison, while the lands of the European Reich lie under a cloud of demonic darkness.
Meanwhile, the mighty Matriarchy, thanks to the mystical technology of Nikolai Tesla, has ushered in a new age of gods; and in the Far East, Emperor Meiji has united Japan once more. Its armies now march toward the mainland to join the struggle for power.
Balance will never be found while the war still rages, for there can be only one victor. That victory will determine the fate of man.
When the occult-obsessed Reich unveils a weapon with the power to imbue grant its army demonic powers, RAF pilot Nick Cross and special agent Caitlin “Hoax” Lambsbury must join forces with unlikely allies to capture the device at any cost.
In the face of overwhelming odds, can these two agents survive long enough to complete their mission? Prepare for a gripping battle to determine the fate of the world!
Engima will be on sale soon, but you can download a PDF of chapter one right Here, right now...

Jimdependence Day
Today is a day that I always stop and take a moment to reflect; April 18th is my Independence Day.
Back in 1997, I made a decision that would change the course of my entire life. I quit my job - my nice, normal Earth job - to become a writer full time. I've blogged about this before, but I think it bears repeating, and not just because I'm taking the opportunity to give myself a pat on the back. My independence proves that it can be done. To every wannabe writer out there who fears that they could never make the leap to supporting themselves through their work, I can tell you this: I did it. I'm still doing it.
I'm not going to kid you, it was a big thing. Back in '97, when Comet Halle-Bopp was in the skies, TSR was bought out by Wizards of the Coast and we all had high hopes for The Phantom Menace, there was no certainty I could make a career out of this writing thing. But I was never fearful, not really...because I knew it was the right thing for me to do.
And I can say, hand on heart, that I have never once regretted it, not even in the darkest days of my freelance life. I'm a writer; I think have been all my life, it was just on that day that I finally owned that realization. So here I am, sixteen years on, my writing career is now old enough to ride a moped or buy a lottery ticket, and I can say that yeah, I did all this...and I'm not done yet.

You Are Hearing Me Talk...To Literary Treks (Again!)
Once more, the folks at the excellent Trek.FM podcast site have asked me to come back and chat to them some more about my Star Trek writing, and this time I'm talking about my new Star Trek: The Next Generation novella The Stuff of Dreams, available now in eBook format.
Matthew Rushing and his co-host Christopher Jones presents the Literary Treks podcast discussing Star Trek novels and comics, and if you're a fan of the "expanded universe" of Trek fiction, their regular show features an in-depth an thoughtful dissection of the stories beyond the screen.
It all started years ago with an idea revolving around that unusual spatial anomaly in Generations. It ended with the commissioning of a Next Generation novella called The Stuff of Dreams.
In this episode of Literary Treks we’re joined by James Swallow to talk about his new story that centers on Captain Jean-Luc Picard and goes a long way—in just 94 pages—toward fleshing out the inner workings of one of Starfleet’s greatest captains.
Spoilers abound in this interview, so make sure you read the novella first...
Once again, thanks for Matt and Chris for having me on the show! Check out the interview Here (starting at the 43:42 mark; I had a cold, so I apologise for sounding a little stuffed-up) or subscribe to Literary Treks via iTunes Here.

Star Trek The Next Generation - The Stuff of Dreams is out!
This week, my new Star Trek The Next Generation eBook novella The Stuff of Dreams went
live, and it's available now for Kindle users from Amazon, for iPad via
iBooks, on Nook, Kobo and pretty much every kind of padd-like device
you might wish to have it on.
When Captain Picard is summoned back to the mysterious space-time phenomenon known as the nexus, he and his crew become embroiled in a desperate plot to rewrite history, no matter what the cost.
As I noted downblog, The Stuff of Dreams centres on Picard and acts as a return of sorts to Star Trek Generations. The novella's picks up after the events of the Cold Equations trilogy by David Mack (and contains spoilers for those books).
I'm pleased to say reader response has been pretty strong so far, and in the weeks ahead I'm going to be discussing this story on a couple of Star Trek podcasts, so more on that to come...

You Are Hearing...Some More Epic Stuff
A few posts downblog I mentioned musician Alexander Norman (aka ADN Compositions) who had been inspired by my Horus Heresy book Fear To Tread to create an epic track based on the events of the novel; and now he's done it again, this time with a piece called "To The Brink", with inspiration taken from my first Horus Heresy tale The Flight of the Eisenstein. It's pretty damn cool.
